The world appears more interesting when you live more than half way to the pole. Different voices too.

Struggling with Vaclav Havel

“he balances ... , between
nothingness and meaningfulness”

from Charter 77

Speak the truth.
There are no rules or dogma
to do it for you.
War is never the end.
But sadly,
it is often the beginning
if art goes astray.

Imagine
great crowds clapping
swooning in admiration
at beguiling words
floating from pen
to tongue
to air waves
spewing catchy images
everyone understands and knows
how they
are one of a multitude
anyone can see
moving and sighing
in delight
breathing emotion
so familiar
no one remembers
why
fulsome fondness
for freedom
now never
can be
dismissed.

It ain’t bumpkin poetry—
no nursery rhyme themes
simple child virtue
stories repeating
misbegotten Sunday school
hokum snitched
literally
out-of-context
proving that god is good
for the non-thinking
believing
faithful Falwell sycophant
forced to follow
a scheme
and form
unfit for repetition.

Not just for Jane Fonda—-
losers and winners
know that hell
is where they must go
to see why
even fools believe
nirvana’s gate
opens for those who seek
truth before fame;
service before reward
makes it
all worthwhile.
